Calculate each layer separately
Measure the actual gravel area and enter the placed or compacted depth specified for that layer. Keep gravel, base material and bedding separate when their dimensions or depths differ. The example is arithmetic, not a recommended construction detail.
Curves, slopes and changes in grade may need several measurements. Use the full yard planner for non-rectangular zones, and confirm how the supplier accounts for handling, settling and compaction before ordering.
Example: an 18 ft by 10 ft area
The area is 18 × 10 = 180 square feet. Divide an example depth of 2 inches by 12 to convert it to feet. The volume is 180 × (2 ÷ 12) = 30 cubic feet, or 30 ÷ 27 = 1.11 cubic yards.
These totals contain no extra allowance. A deliberately chosen 10% allowance would give 33 cubic feet, or 1.22 cubic yards. The percentage is a simple volume addition, not a prediction of how much a particular gravel will compact.
Why this calculator does not guess tons
A cubic yard measures volume; a ton measures weight. Stone type, grading, moisture and product specifications affect the conversion. Ask the supplier for the density or tons-per-cubic-yard factor for the exact gravel you intend to buy.
Give the supplier your calculated volume and ask about its conversion, rounding rules and delivery minimum. Do not apply the weight of one gravel product to another, or treat a generic online density as a quote.
